LoFi Video, Project 1: Story as a Series of Stills
May 13th, 2008 by chad
Due: Thursday, May 15, 2008
Assignment: Develop a complete story with a duration of 1-3 minutes using only images with cuts between them (so…no sound, no text (except for a title at the beginning or end) and no transitions). I suggest either choosing a story from the news, or sharing a personal narrative; these will be most likely work better if they are small stories and not epic sagas. Concentrate on the juxtaposition of each image with the next so that each edit contributes as much information/emotion as possible to the story. Please choose a story you care about. May the ghost of Kuleshov haunt your project!
What to Turn in: A Quicktime movie file burned onto a CD labelled with your name and the title of your piece
How to do it:
- Shoot your still images with whatever device you have (you may alter the images and/or include a few public domain or Creative Common licensed photos for difficult shots, but the vast majority of images you must shoot yourself)
- Resize all the finished images to 640×480 pixels
- Import them into PowerPoint (as we did in class Monday) and scale them to fill the screen
- Use the “Make Movie” feature to export a Quicktime .MOV file. Leave the default transition time (it’s either 3 or 5 seconds) as a basic working unit of time; If you need an image to be on screen for a longer period of time, just duplicate that slide one or more times.
- Burn the resulting movie file to a labelled CD-ROM
